PREADMISSION EXAMINATION INFORMATION:

The examination used by this school is a standardized test used to measure the applicant’s ability and knowledge of reading for information, mathematics and locating information. It is suggested that applicants review and prepare for the examination. The GED Preparation books and Preparation for Practical Nursing Preadmission Test by Arco are recommended for review. Most of these are available at local libraries or bookstores.

The test consists of these three parts:

READING FOR INFORMATION: The Reading for Information test measures skill in reading and understanding work-related instructions and policies. The reading passages and questions in the assessment are based on the actual demands of the workplace. Passages take the form of memos, bulletins, notices, letters, policy manuals, and governmental regulations.

MATHEMATICS: The Applied Mathematics test measures skill in applying mathematical reasoning to work-related problems. The test questions require the examinee to set up and solve the types of problems and do the types of calculations that actually occur in the workplace. This test is designed to be taken with a calculator. As on the job, the calculator serves as a tool for problem solving.

LOCATING INFORMATION: The Locating Information test measures skill in using information presented in workplace graphics such as diagrams, floor plans, tables, forms, graphs, charts, and instrument gauges. Examinees are asked to locate, insert, compare, and summarize information in one graphic or in a group of related graphics. At the highest level, examinees are asked to make decisions and draw conclusions based on information contained in one or more graphics.

TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE

The following types of financial aid are available at Portage Lakes Career Center.

Federal PELL Grant: A Federal Grant that can provide an eligible  student with monies that can be applied to the cost of tuition, fees, books, and equipment.  Students enrolled in a program of at least 900 clock hours in length can receive a Federal PELL Grant of up to $4310  per year.  Students enrolled in 600 clock hour programs can receive a PELL award of up to $2666, respectively.  Because this is a grant program, these monies are not repaid by the student.

Federal STAFFORD Loan Program: This program allows eligible students to borrow money at a low rate of interest.  Monies borrowed from this program must be repaid.  Repayment of the loan begins six months after the student graduates or withdraws from the Career Center.

Federal PLUS Program: This  type  of  loan can  be borrowed by the parents of a dependent student whose PELL and Stafford Awards are not sufficient to cover their educational expenses.  Repayment of this loan can be deferred until after the student graduates or withdraws from the school; however, interest begins to accrue as soon as the loan is disbursed.

Veterans Education Benefits: Interested students should contact the Financial Aid Office for application assistance.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA): This funding can provide assistance to unemployed and low income students.  Call your local “one stop” office for information.
