SENIOR HEALTHCARE TECHNICIAN PROGRAM

The senior year of the Healthcare Technician (HCT) Program is a co-op program meaning the student will be required to work in a healthcare facility.  He/she will attend school until the end of fourth period and will work at the job site a minimum of 15 hours per week.  The co-op portion of the program will be considered as the student’s lab.  He/she will be paid for the work experience and will earn three credits upon successfully completing this portion of the program.

Depending on the work site, many students will work more than the required 15 hours per week.  The instructor will approve each training site.  Examples of past HCT training sites include pharmacies, dietary services, physicians’ offices, veterinary offices and extended care facilities.

If the student is not on job placement at the beginning of the senior year, he/she will be required to make at least two employer contacts per day.  While job hunting, students will also be required to have a form signed by each employer who the student personally contacts.  The work experience along with the completion of academic courses will complete the requirements for the student’s high school diploma.

Senior HCT students will take required academic courses as well as one period of science (anatomy and physiology) and a related class.  The related class curriculum consists of study that addresses successful job performance and professionalism.  It includes medical ethics, communication skills, diversity in the workplace and types of healthcare careers.  Two credits will be earned upon completion of the related and science classes and an additional two credits will be earned by completing the required academic courses.
